How ADO Differs from AEO and GEO
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) focuses on getting your brand mentioned when humans ask AI a question. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) focuses on appearing in AI-generated content. ADO addresses a different scenario entirely: the AI agent makes a selection without the user ever asking “which tool should I use?”
When a developer tells Claude Code to “set up authentication for this app,” the agent picks a library on its own. When a business AI assistant is told to “schedule a meeting and send invites,” it selects a calendar tool without a human comparison-shopping step. ADO optimizes for those autonomous decisions.
Why ADO Matters
Research analyzing 2,430 AI agent prompts found that agents create near-monopoly dynamics in certain categories: GitHub Actions captured 93.8% of CI/CD picks, Stripe took 91.4% of payment selections, and Vercel received 100% of hosting choices. Products not selected by agents risk becoming invisible in an increasingly agent-mediated market.
Three factors make ADO distinct from traditional visibility optimization:
- No human in the loop. The user delegates the decision entirely to the agent.
- Training data recency beats market share. Prisma dropped from 79% to 0% agent selection across model versions, despite being a market leader, because of training data cutoff changes.
- Simplicity wins over maturity. Agents prefer tools with clean APIs and straightforward integration. Redux receives zero primary agent picks despite widespread adoption.
Key ADO Signals
Several factors influence whether an agent selects your product:
- Documentation clarity. Agents parse docs to evaluate tools. Clear, structured documentation with concise capability descriptions increases selection probability.
- Training data presence. Being present in recent, high-quality content that enters LLM training pipelines keeps your product in the agent’s knowledge.
- API and integration simplicity. Agents favor tools they can integrate with fewer steps and less configuration.
- Tool descriptions. In MCP and similar frameworks, the 2-3 sentence tool description is often all an agent sees before deciding.
Measuring ADO
Monitoring agent decisions requires tracking how AI models respond to task-oriented prompts (not just question-oriented queries) across multiple LLMs. Changes across model versions reveal how training data shifts affect your product’s selection rate.
